West Oak Area Location

The West Oak Area Homeowners Association (WOAHA) is committed to preserving the unique historical character of the West Oak Area and other single-family neighborhoods in Denton. WOAHA believes the city should shape growth for the good of the areas where the citizens of Denton live and raise their children. Our mission is to ensure that the West Oak Area, and all neighborhoods in Denton, are preserved, through advocacy and cooperation with other neighborhood organizations. When we preserve our neighborhoods, we preserve the quality of life of the city as a whole. (Bylaws)

PAST EVENTS

Tuesday, November 6, 2007 at 6:30 p.m.: A representative of 1907 W. Oak attended a Denton City Council hearing in the City Hall at 215 E. McKinney Street to request a Specific Use Permit (SUP) in order to operate the home and property as a fraternity. This hearing replaced the hearing scheduled on October 2 below, which was delayed at the request of the representative of the owner of the property. This permit required that changes be made to the home to comply with commercial codes, and it would have allowed public, fraternity-type activities to be conducted on the property. Although this request was unanimously denied by the Commissioners at the Planning and Zoning hearing last month, the representative was continuing to pursue the permit at the City Council on November 6.
Result: The City Counsel voted unanimously (6-0) to deny the request for a Specific Use Permit.

Tuesday, October 2, 2007 at 6:30 p.m.: A representative of 1907 W. Oak will be attending a Denton City Council hearing in the City Hall at 215 E. McKinney Street to request a Specific Use Permit (SUP) in order to operate the home and property as a fraternity. This permit will require that changes be made to the home to comply with commercial codes, and it will allow public, fraternity-type activities to be conducted on the property. Although this request was unanimously denied by the Commissioners at the Planning and Zoning hearing last month, the representative is continuing to pursue the permit at the City Council on Oct. 2.
Result: The October 2 hearing was postponed at the request of the owner of the property.

Thursday, October 4 at 7:00 p.m.: Anyone interested in learning more about how to apply for historic or conservation district status for your neighborhood is invited to a gathering. at 915 West Oak. Peggy Capps has graciously offered to host and to outline the pros and cons of historic district status and answer any questions or concerns.

While folks in all older neighborhoods might be interested, this meeting is especially intended for those in the West Oak Area: from Jagoe west to Thomas, and Scripture south to Hickory. We hope to move forward from the work we did several years ago on this matter.

The Denton Economic Development Partnership has a lot of helpful information, including the actual ordinances for both kinds of districts at http://www.dentonedp.com/downtown_development/historic_preservation.asp. You might want to cruise around it before the meeting.

Saturday, October 22, 2005: WOAHOA Garage Sale at 1801 West Oak, 1721 West Oak, and 1717 West Oak. A garage sale will be held to retire the neighborhood's legal bill. Please help. You can donate saleable stuff, bake cookies and muffins, help set up on Friday, October 21, or work the garage sale on October 22. Donated goods can be dropped off at Bob Ralph's home, 1717 West Oak, the week of the sale. We can also pick up donations. Contact Bob Ralph at 368-0217 or bralph@charter.net, Elise Ridenour at 898-1428 or emride01@chater.net, or Lelie Enlow at 387-6897 or leslieenlow@hotmail.com .

Sunday, May 16, 2004, 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.: West Oak Area Neighborhood Barbecue at 2044 West Oak. This event raised $2,064.51, reducing the association legal debt to $5,746.27. The total legal bills were $23,196.

Monday, February 16, 2004: The Board of Zoning Adjustments at 4 p.m. considered the appeal of a denial of a request for a local permit to build an apartment building at 1822 and 1902-1904 West Oak. The final vote was 7 to 0 against the appeal. The denial of the request for a local permit to build an apartment building was upheld. The November 17 meeting had been canceled for lack of a quorum, the December meeting at the request of WOAHA, and the January 26 meeting at the request of the owner of the property.

Garage Sale Earns $2600 for Association!

The West Oak Area Homeowners Association sponsored a giant neighborhood Garage and Bake Sale Saturday August 24, 2002 from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm at 1920 West Oak Street. Customers were lined up waiting for the sale to begin by 6:00 in the morning.

The proceeds from the sale will be used to help pay the association's legal expenses being incurred in our efforts to prevent a developer from building a three story, 22-unit apartment building in the middle of a block of single-family homes on West Oak Street.
